CANDIDATE PULSE · WEEK ENDING 9 OCTOBER 2026

Candidates we’ve spoken with are open to LegalTech opportunities, particularly roles offering greater ownership, exposure to AI and the chance to influence how a product is used. Their questions are becoming more specific: they want to understand what they will own, how commercial the role is, who will support them and what they will learn that they are not learning now.

WHAT WE HEARD THIS WEEK

Titles are not enough

One candidate initially understood a Legal AI Advisor opportunity to be primarily a sales role. Their interest increased once the advisory, workflow and product elements were explained.

Candidates need a clear picture of the day-to-day work, especially when a role combines legal expertise, technology and commercial responsibility.

Progression means learning

Another candidate was performing well but no longer felt challenged. The important question was not why they wanted to leave. It was:

“What do you want to learn next?”

A new employer or title will not be enough if the work feels familiar.

Smaller teams need clearer answers

Candidates interested in early-stage or regional roles are asking how decisions are made, who they will report to, what support is available and how much influence they will have.

Ownership attracts people. Unclear reporting lines and limited support can make them hesitate.

COMMUNITY SNAPSHOT

LEGAL ENGINEERING POLL

legal-engineer-hiring-chart.png

Legal and Legal Ops experience and the ability to bridge technical and commercial conversations tied for first place, together taking two thirds of the vote. Hands-on AI experimentation followed, while a clear market vision for AI ranked last. Practical legal understanding and commercial fluency are valued above AI strategy.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR HIRING TEAMS

A strong hiring brief should explain:

  1. What the person will own during their first three months

  2. How the role is divided between advisory, product, implementation and sales

  3. Who they will work with and report to

  4. How success will be measured

  5. What they will have the opportunity to learn

This level of detail helps suitable candidates recognise the opportunity and allows others to step away before time is wasted on both sides.
