Harvey has made two very different announcements this week.
First came the global rollout
Squire Patton Boggs has selected Harvey for a global rollout of its legal AI platform. The firm says the technology will support how its lawyers work and help it continue developing its client service across its international practice.
But the more interesting part is not simply that Harvey has gained another major customer.
Squire Patton Boggs will also work with Harvey as a design partner on forthcoming launches. Harvey says the relationship will include developing tools intended to enhance the firm’s public-policy advisory capabilities.
Then Harvey took the same approach somewhere completely different
Harvey has also launched a dedicated Pro Bono Program in the UK, US and Australia. Its first design partners are senior pro bono leaders from Ashurst Perkins Coie, DLA Piper and Nelson Mullins.
The initial work includes custom agents for high-volume matters such as housing support, veterans’ services and social-welfare claims. Harvey also plans to develop templates, knowledge resources and repeatable workflows that could give pro bono teams more time to support clients.
The company says it will provide dedicated legal-engineering support in the US and UK, measure how the technology affects outcomes and capacity and later give an initial group of frontline legal-service organisations free access through a pilot.
Commercial learning and social impact can meet
For founders, this is the bigger lesson.
An impact programme does not have to sit separately from the product. When it uses the company’s real capabilities, works with experienced partners and measures meaningful results, it can create value for the people being served while teaching the company something important about its technology.
The DealTechno take
These announcements show two sides of how a LegalTech company can grow well.
The Squire Patton Boggs rollout brings enterprise adoption, close product feedback and market credibility. The Pro Bono Program applies the same build-with-users approach to a difficult social problem where capacity is urgently needed.
Neither works through technology alone. Both depend on legal expertise, product judgement, implementation and people who can translate between users and technical teams.
