Ivo Opens Its Contract AI Model. What Makes the Product Worth Paying For?

DealTechno

Ivo has released Sage, an open-source AI model for complex contract work. Announced at its Inscribe conference on 1 October, the release lets developers, researchers and legal teams download, test and build on the model.

For LegalTech founders, that raises a useful commercial question: when customers can access the underlying capability, what makes the complete product worth buying?

Opening the model, expanding the product

Ivo developed Sage with River AI by adapting DeepSeek V4 Flash for contract work, using public data and synthetic data generated by lawyers. The company says releasing the model and its evaluation record will help others examine and improve it.

Sage was one of three Inscribe announcements. Ivo also introduced Collaborate, covering contract intake through negotiation, approval and signature, and a contract-review benchmark developed with Micro1.

That combination makes the story interesting. Ivo is opening up a model while developing the surrounding workflow and ways to assess its performance.

Access is the beginning of the buying decision

A legal team downloading a model still has decisions to make. How will it work with their documents? Who manages access? How are company policies applied? What happens when the output needs checking or the process changes?

Those questions give software companies room to create value. They also give buyers a way to distinguish a useful capability from a product they can depend on.

For founders, the practical test is simple: could your commercial team explain why a customer should buy your product even if they could obtain the model themselves?

The answer needs to be concrete. It might be less time assembling information, a reliable approval process or a clearer record of decisions. “We use AI” leaves too much of the buying case unanswered.

The DealTechno take

Our reading of Ivo’s announcements is that model access and product value can coexist. Opening one layer does not settle what customers will pay for across the whole system.

For LegalTech businesses, this puts product positioning and customer understanding under scrutiny. The people building and selling the software need to agree on the problem it solves, the outcome it delivers and the evidence behind that promise.

That is a useful conversation to have before expanding the sales team. If the value is difficult to explain internally, another salesperson will inherit the same difficulty.
