Legal Engineering is becoming one of the most important functions in LegalTech. Yet the market is still deciding exactly what the role should include.
That tension shaped the conversation at our recent DealTechno Breakfast, hosted by Rob and attended by founders, sales leaders and Legal Engineering experts.
The discussion explored where Legal Engineering is heading, how it connects with customer success and account management and what LegalTech companies need to do to attract the right people.
Turning technology into value
Legal Engineers understand how lawyers work and help clients apply technology to real legal problems.
They examine workflows, guide adoption and find better ways for clients to use a product. This is why the role often overlaps with customer success and account management: each function is responsible for helping clients realise value from their technology.
Legal Engineering also gives lawyers a route into LegalTech without leaving their legal experience behind.
Why hiring is difficult
Demand is growing, but the talent pool remains limited.
Companies need people who combine legal knowledge with technical confidence, commercial awareness and strong client communication. Few candidates arrive with that exact mix.
The inconsistent job title makes the search harder. A Legal Engineer might lead implementation at one company, shape product at another or work across client strategy, legal process design and customer success.
Senior lawyers may also assume these positions are junior, heavily technical or similar to customer support. In practice, many carry direct responsibility for adoption, client strategy and commercial value.
What hiring teams should consider
A LegalTech hiring brief should start with the work itself.
Candidates need to understand:
-
Which problems they will own
-
Where their legal experience will matter
-
How closely they will work with clients, product and commercial teams
-
What progression looks like
-
Why the move makes sense compared with staying in legal practice
Hiring managers should also look beyond people who already have Legal Engineer on their CV. Plenty of strong candidates are doing parts of the job under a different title.
A clearer brief and a wider search give companies a much better chance of finding the person they actually need.
