Trusted by teams at

Seed-stage LegalTech companies are paying close to Series A rates for their first commercial and legal engineering hires, and most of those hires take six to nine weeks to land.

The short version

Founding Account Executive
£55k–£75k base / £100k–£140k OTE in London; $110k–$150k base / $200k–$280k OTE in the US.
Legal Engineer
£65k–£90k base in London; $140k–$180k base in the US, with the AI-native leaders pulling the top of the market up.
Customer Success / Implementation lead
£50k–£70k base in London; $85k–$115k base in the US.
Time to hire
40–70 days to a signed offer for most first hires, then a one to three month UK notice period before they start.
Founder-led hiring is slower
At companies under 25 people, hires take 62 days without a recruiter and 42 days with one (Ashby).
Our desk
DealTechno's LegalTech searches averaged 41 days to hire over the last 12 months.

Who Seed companies hire first

At Seed the founder is still the best salesperson. The first hires exist to take selling and implementation off the founder's plate without losing the founder's credibility with lawyers.

  1. Founding Account Executive. Converts founder-sourced and inbound pipeline, then writes the first sales playbook.
  2. Legal Engineer. A qualified lawyer who runs demos and pilots and turns user feedback into product requirements.
  3. Customer Success / Implementation lead. Onboards the first 10–30 customers; often merged with the legal engineer role at this stage.
  4. SDR / BDR. Worth hiring only once there is a pitch that works without the founder in the room.
  5. Head of Sales. The hire most often made too early; in our experience it lands best after one or two AEs have closed outside the founder's network.

What Seed companies are paying

Ranges show where most offers land in Q4 2026, not outliers. Equity is a percentage of fully diluted shares on a four-year vest.

How the founding AE package is built. The strongest US plans for a first AE run 60/40 base-to-variable rather than the usual 50/50, with commission guaranteed for the first two quarters (Scalerr). Generic UK early-stage sales salaries sit lower, with a median P3 base of £47,600 at pre-seed/seed (Ravio); LegalTech AEs who have sold to law firms price well above that.

How long Seed hires are taking

Most Seed hires take 40–70 days from search start to signed offer. In the UK, add a one to three month notice period before day one; in the US, two weeks is typical.

RoleSearch to signed offerUK notice periodMain bottleneck
Founding Account Executive40–55 days1–3 monthsFounder interview availability; candidates weighing base against equity risk
Legal Engineer50–70 days1–3 months (law firm associates often 3)Small pool of lawyers who have already moved into tech
Customer Success / Implementation lead35–50 days1 monthUnclear scope between CS, implementation and legal engineering
SDR / BDR20–30 days2–4 weeksRarely the constraint
Head of Sales70–100 days3 monthsAgreeing what "head of" means in a 10-person company

For context, the 2026 median across all companies is 30 days for business roles and 40 for technical roles, measured from application (Ashby, via Pin). Small companies run slower because founders are the bottleneck: under 25 employees, hires take 62 days without a recruiter and 42 with one (You-Source, citing Ashby).

What's different about hiring in LegalTech at Seed

Where Seed hiring goes wrong

  1. Hiring a VP Sales before there is a playbook. A leader with nothing to scale ends up as an expensive AE, or leaves within a year.
  2. Under-funding the founding AE's base to protect runway. It quietly filters the shortlist down to people who can afford risk, not people who can sell.
  3. Running a big-company process. Five rounds with a week between each loses candidates: candidate experience holds for about nine days, then drops sharply after three weeks (Ashby, via Pin).
  4. Searching only for the "Legal Engineer" title. The best candidates are often in-house lawyers and associates who have already led AI or knowledge-management projects and proactively moved towards tech.
How we built these numbers, and sources

Ranges combine public 2026 compensation and hiring benchmarks with DealTechno's own LegalTech search data: 39 permanent LegalTech hires since early 2025 and 40+ live searches across the UK and US. They reflect London and the main US hubs; regional UK offers typically run 10–20% lower. "Search to signed offer" is our estimate of elapsed time for a well-run process.
