Trusted by teams at

Series A LegalTech companies are building their first repeatable sales team, and the market is pricing that in: mid-market AE packages, legal engineers and first sales leaders all step up a band from Seed.

The short version

Mid-market Account Executive
£60k–£80k base / £110k–£150k OTE in London; $90k–$125k base / $180k–$240k OTE in the US.
Legal Engineer
£75k–£100k base in London; $160k–$200k base in the US.
Customer Success Manager
£55k–£75k base in London; $90k–$120k base in the US.
Time to hire
35–65 days to a signed offer for individual contributors, 75–110 days for a first VP Sales.
The real clock is longer
Measured from job opened to first hire, the median is 60 days for business roles and 75 for technical roles (Ashby).
Our desk
DealTechno's LegalTech searches averaged 41 days to hire over the last 12 months.

Who Series A companies hire

At Series A the job is to prove the sales motion works without the founder. Hiring moves from one-offs to small teams.

  1. Mid-market Account Executives. Usually two to four, selling to mid-size law firms and in-house teams.
  2. SDRs / BDRs. One SDR for every two to three AEs once outbound is a real channel.
  3. Legal Engineers. The role starts to split into pre-sales (demos, pilots) and post-sales (adoption, renewals).
  4. Customer Success Managers. The first dedicated CS team, owning onboarding and renewals.
  5. Solutions Engineer. The first technical pre-sales hire once security reviews and integrations slow deals down.
  6. Head of Sales / VP Sales. The first commercial leader who did not found the company.

What Series A companies are paying

Ranges show where most offers land in Q4 2026, not outliers. Equity is a percentage of fully diluted shares on a four-year vest.

Quota reality check. Only about 40% of US mid-market AEs hit quota (RepVue), so the strongest candidates ask about ramp time and attainment across the current team before they ask about OTE. The same AE role costs roughly 1.6–1.8 times more in New York than in London, which matters if you are opening a US office.

How long Series A hires are taking

Most Series A individual contributor hires take 35–65 days from search start to signed offer; a first VP Sales takes two to four months. In the UK, add a one to three month notice period.

RoleSearch to signed offerUK notice periodMain bottleneck
Mid-market Account Executive35–50 days1–3 monthsProving attainment to candidates; competing offers from Series B players
SDR / BDR20–30 days2–4 weeksVolume screening

Solutions Engineer45–65 days1–3 monthsFew SEs with legal-sector integration experience
VP Sales75–110 days3 monthsBoard and founder alignment on the profile

Application volume is not the problem: applications per hire have roughly tripled since 2021 to about 291 (AI Recruiter, citing Ashby). Screening is. Measured from job opened to first hire, the median is 60 days for business roles and 75 for technical ones (Klearskill, citing Ashby).

What's different about hiring in LegalTech at Series A

Where Series A hiring goes wrong

  1. Hiring three AEs at once before one has proven the playbook. If the first AE outside the founder's network hasn't closed, three more just triple the burn.
  2. Hiring a VP Sales who has only run mature teams. Leaders from large LegalTech incumbents often struggle to build from a standing start. Test for what they built, not what they inherited.
  3. Copying a generic SaaS comp plan. Law firm buying cycles need ramp periods and annual targets that reflect when firms actually buy.
  4. Letting the process drift. Candidate experience drops sharply after three weeks (Ashby, via Pin), and Series A candidates usually have a Series B offer in hand.
How we built these numbers, and sources

Ranges combine public 2026 compensation and hiring benchmarks with DealTechno's own LegalTech search data: 39 permanent LegalTech hires since early 2025 and 40+ live searches across the UK and US. They reflect London and the main US hubs; regional UK offers typically run 10–20% lower. "Search to signed offer" is our estimate of elapsed time for a well-run process.
